William's journey to the Grey Wolf Award

Published Fri 24 Jan 2025

I joined Sea Scouts because I thought it would be a good way to learn new stuff and also to be social. I learnt by doing, and then passing on these skills to the younger cubs. We did so many activities, both at Hall nights and on Cuboree, Governor General Camp,(GG) Crossland's Canoe Camp, South Metropolitan Regional Camp. All the activities were good. I learnt so much from them they went well beyond what I thought we would be doing.

The Grey Wolf badge represents my time at cubs and all of my hard earned efforts, where I have learnt lots of skills that will help me in my future. I will wear the Grey Wolf badge to inspire and encourage the young cubs and be able to tell to them, all of the skills I have learnt on my journey to get the peak award. It has been a mountain to climb and I have many stories to tell of my journey to the younger cubs.

The Scout Promise and Law sets a high standard. That I will do my best.  I have a Duty to help and respect others. I have a duty to look after the environment and surrounding nature.  I have a duty of care for others and especially to look after the younger cubs. To teach them my stories and what has been taught to me. I will always believe in myself no matter how hard it gets. I will learn from my experiences. I will face my challenges with courage and I will have patience for others when they face theirs.

I had a good Patrol Leader (PL) in my Patrol, she was a good leader, she made sure everyone behaved. She took time to explain things. She encouraged me to keep learning more, tying knots to build a raft. I had another good PL who shared his leadership duties with me on a night hike and this was my first time being an Assistant Patrol Leader (APL). I became a PL for the first time on the Jerusalem Hike when my PL was away. I took charge of the Patrol on the walk, I shared my drinking water with the other cubs. I checked the path was safe. I kept them all together and encouraged them to walk back up the mountain. I made it fun so that everyone was in good spirits as it was a hot day and a long walk. On the larger camps such as Cuboree and GG, we had good leaders who helped me learn the basics of event camping in a large group. I have a good cub leader, he makes it fun, he encourages us with the program to come up with good activities to run. I will pass on my leadership before I go up to Scouts.

I have developed my social skills by making lots of friendships at cubs. I also made friends at the larger event camps like GG Camp and Cuboree Camp. I have developed emotionally with Cubs as it is in the outdoors, and you get to go camping and travelling. So I have been away, on lots of camps and I don’t mind being away from my home and without my parents.

All the hiking and outdoor activities have been good for my physical development. We do lots of small hikes and longer ones. I took the other cubs on my adventurous journey up to the Blue Mountains. We have done lots of Canoeing and other water activities that also keeps me fit. Through all the night activities, doing my Special Interest Areas (SIAs) and Grey Wolf, I have developed more intellectually. I have developed lots of interests in the outdoors, and Pioneering, First Aid, Camping, Hike Cooking and Survival Skills. I have also developed leadership skills being a PL.   I have done lots of fire nights. We have done lots of cooking using pots and also cooking off the fire. The one that I really enjoyed was Pioneering, learning to tie knots and build structures. I learnt to build a flag pole, emergency shelter, monkey bridge, raft, and tall tower. Now I know how to do these things I can now teach the younger cubs and I will keep learning more about these interests. I have learnt leadership skills first by doing. Then getting help from the older cubs, scouts, and ventures.  As I got older, I had usual done the activities before. So, I knew what I was doing and was able to tell what to do to the other cubs.

Then I offered to help out James the leader when packing up for the larger camps, like Cuboree, GGs Camp, Crosslands and Regional. So, by helping out packing and unpacking I got to help the leaders, and by doing this I got more confident to help out and start to take on some leadership ship. Also, my APL Darby was good as he let me lead his Patrol and gave me the confidence to look after the younger cubs on a night hike. So, he helped me lots by sharing the leading. I also did the leadership course and have attended Group Council meetings.
